Never before were there Gallaudet alumni events at the National Asian Deaf Congress (NADC) and National Black Deaf Advocates (NDBA) conferences. We had events at both of them during the first week of July. For NADC, it was at a restaurant, Chevy’s, in San Francisco on July 2; for NBDA, it was at the conference headquarters, Renaissance Grand Hotel, in St. Louis on July 5.

The purpose of alumni events was to share news with the alumni and express how critical the support of the alumni is to the University. Also, this gave the alumni an opportunity to ask questions or to express their thoughts with the University.

GUAA Vice-President Alyce Slater Reynolds, ’76 & G-’78; Presidential Assistant, Diversity Relations Darian Burwell, ’97 & G-’04; and Board of Associates Chair John Yeh, ’71, led the NADC alumni event.

Along with Burwell, Director of Alumni Relations and GUAA Executive Director Sam Sonnenstrahl, ’79 & G-’84, and Development Office Associate Director for Corporate & Foundation Relations Doris Parent made presentations at the NBDA alumni event. Dr. Reginald Redding, ’79 & PhD-’95, conducted a wild auction for the Gallaudet blanket.

Both events resulted in donations for scholarships for Gallaudet students. It was great seeing the support alumni have for the University, especially for students.

The Office of Alumni Relations is preparing something similar for alumni attending the National Council of Hispano Deaf and Hard of Hearing National Conference at Gallaudet this October.
