Alumni eNewsletter: Hearing and Speech Center now accepting different forms of health insurance (Archives)

Greetings, Alumni and Friends!

We wish to inform you that as of May 31, 2011, the Gallaudet University Hearing and Speech Center (GUHSC) started collecting third-party insurance information from students, staff, faculty, and their immediate family members. This change is based on directives we received from the Gallaudet University Strategic Plan, which was approved by the Board of Trustees. The GUHSC has been working with the Office of the President and the executive director of business and support services to implement these changes.

Accepting insurance will offer us an opportunity to provide our students with a variety of clinical experiences working with diverse populations, and it allows us to align our clinic training with practices common to the professional world. Consistent with most insurance provider guidelines, we are no longer able to provide services previously provided at no charge. Those services will now be covered by health care insurance providers. In most cases, you will be required to make co-payments at the time services are rendered and we will bill your insurance provider to pay the remaining balance. You will continue to have scheduling preference for all GUHSC services and we will continue to provide you with ongoing quality care.

We will continue to offer a wide range of audiological and speech therapy services across the life span by fully certified and licensed audiologists and speech language pathologists along with highly trained post-graduate clinicians. Our services include: hearing evaluations, hearing aid dispensing and follow up, cochlear implant support services, needs assessment for assistive devices, aural rehabilitation and communication services, speech-language services, and dizziness and balance screenings.

We suggest that you check with your insurance provider to find out what services are covered and whether you will need to request a medical referral. GUHSC currently accepts Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Health Care, TRICARE, and Cigna. We will not deny services to anyone who is not insured by these participating providers, but payment will still be due at the time services are rendered. We will submit a claim to your insurer for reimbursement. We also are continuing to apply as a preferred provider to other insurance companies.

Please do not hesitate to contact our financial officer, Ms. April Jefferson, at if you have any questions about your insurance coverage, co-pays, and deductibles specific to your plan. There is also more information for your review at which you might find helpful.

Thank you and we look forward to serving your needs.
