President Hurwitz and First Lady Vicki Hurwitz invited San Francisco Bay Area alumni to join them on February 4 at an informal dinner hosted by Russell, ’95, and Melody, E-’96, Stein at their restaurant, Mozzeria. The Steins opened Mozzeria on December 9, 2011 with the simple goal of creating quality pizza that everyone–deaf and hearing–can enjoy. Melody is a third generation restaurateur, and both she and Russell are self-taught chefs. The San Francisco Chronicle says that Mozzeria has "already become a beacon for the Bay Area’s close-knit deaf community," and it is clearly the perfect spot for such an intimate event.
The Bay Area alumni event was a huge success. The more than 60 alumni in attendance gave a warm and gracious welcome to the president and first lady. The atmosphere that evening was filled with enthusiasm about the progress of Gallaudet since President Hurwitz took office, and excitement about Gallaudet’s future, paired with the best food that the Bay Area has to offer. The event was best summed up by Celia May Baldwin, ’70: "It was a royal treat for me!"
The event was sponsored by the Office of Development, which extends special thanks to the Steins for hosting this memorable event. The Gallaudet community is encouraged to visit Mozzeria, located at 3228 16th Street (near Guerrero) in San Francisco, and support the Steins.
