Dear Campus Community,
We are delighted to inform you that Dr. Harry Lang, a highly esteemed educator and leader in the deaf community, will be joining us at the University's 144th Commencement exercises on Friday, May 17, where he will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments. In addition, the board has selected one of our remarkable faculty members, Dr. Stephen Chaikind, to receive professor emeritus status in acknowledgment of his distinguished career at Gallaudet.
Dr. Lang is professor emeritus at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was a faculty member from 1970 to 2012. He taught in a variety of disciplines during his notable career, including physics, which he taught for 20 years and served for a period of time as staff chair. He also taught graduate-level courses on science and mathematics methods for more than 30 years in the Master of Science in Secondary Education program, and a course related to historical perspectives in deaf education. Dr. Lang was also committed to improving the field of education, and worked diligently in this area with creativity and innovation. He was coordinator of RIT/NTID's Office of Faculty Development, where he was responsible for an institute-wide teaching effectiveness program, and he was an educational researcher for many years in the Center for Research, Teaching, and Learning. In addition, Dr. Lang is a gifted and prolific writer on a wide variety of topics, publishing nine books and more than 50 book chapters and journal articles. He has shared his expertise as a member of a number of editorial boards, including the Gallaudet University Press Editorial Board, where he has served from 2000 to the present. He is highly sought as a presenter, both nationally and internationally, and is the recipient of numerous awards.
Dr. Chaikind, a professor in the Department of Business from 1989 to 2012 and Gallaudet's Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year for 1997-1998, will be recognized for his service to the field of education economics, to his department, students, and the University as a whole. An expert in economics, cost and budget analysis, and special education finance, Dr. Chaikind was an analyst in the Congressional Budget Office and chief economist and senior statistical associate for a private firm before beginning his career at Gallaudet. During his first four years at the University, he was also a faculty research fellow with the National Bureau of Economic Research. Dr. Chaikind is widely published and has been a renowned presenter at numerous economics conferences. He was co-editor of Education Finance in the New Millennium and book review editor for the Journal of Education Finance. In addition to exemplary teaching, Dr. Chaikind was known for his involvement in University affairs as a member of the University Faculty Senate, as chair of the Council on Undergraduate Education, and as a member of the University Budget Committee since its inception.
We know that you will wholeheartedly concur with the Board of Trustees' choice of these exemplary individuals to recognize during our upcoming Commencement exercises. We also know that the entire University community extends its sincere appreciation for their far-reaching contributions that have benefited so many people. We look forward to having Dr. Lang and Dr. Chaikind join us as we congratulate them on their achievements. In addition, we are also looking forward to awarding graduates of the Class of 2013 their diplomas for the successful completion of their education from this great university.
