Gallaudet Dance Company

The Gallaudet Dance Company is pleased to announce its upcoming 60th Anniversary dance concert entitled, "Gallaudet Dance Company Celebrates 60 Years of Dance," on Friday, April 3 at 10:30 am and 7:30 pm; and Saturday, April 4 at 7:30 pm in the Elstad Auditorium, Gallaudet University. To commemorate the anniversary of the Gallaudet Dance Company, the Gallaudet Dance Company and Gallaudet Alumni Dancers will be reviving favorite dances from the past sixty years.

The Dance Company has a rich history. It was founded in 1955 by Dr. Peter Wisher. Dr. Wisher observed a student signing "The Lord’s Prayer" in ASL during a ceremony in Chapel Hall. Wisher was so impressed with the beauty of the motions that he suggested using signs as the foundation for dance movements. At first the troupe was social and recreational, but soon they were asked to perform at events on and off campus. Today the Dance Company performs in various genres, including jazz, tap, lyrical ballet, hip-hop and sign language (ASL) incorporated with dance. The company is acclaimed for performances at the White House, the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Center, at Egypt’s National Theater of Cairo and on stages in Israel, Canada, Denmark, Costa Rica, Peru, Barbados, Brazil, St. Lucia, Guatemala, South Korea, the Bahamas, and France.

Since the retirement of Dr. Diane Hottendorf, in May, 2011, the Gallaudet Dance Company has been under the direction of Ms. Sue Gill-Doleac, a former Gallaudet Dancer. The Gallaudet Dance Company consists of 15 dancers. All members of the company are students at Gallaudet University. The Gallaudet Dance company has entertained audiences of all ages around the world for more than 59 years. It is considered to be one of the most exciting groups presenting dance with ASL.

Gallaudet Dancers near and far, who are interested in performing in the 60th Anniversary dance concert, please contact susan.gill-doleac@gallaudet. edu Dance rehearsals are scheduled for Saturday, November 15th and Saturday, March 7th in the Delta Zeta dance studio, Field House.

The Gallaudet Dance Company has come a long way since 1955. "The Lord’s Prayer" which was the first dance performed by the troupe, still remains part of the repertoire and will be performed at the 60th concert as a reminder of the roots of dance at Gallaudet.
