The Gallaudet University Alumni Association Board of Directors meets face-to-face two times per year. Meetings are held in April in conjunction with Charter Day, and in October in conjunction with Homecoming. Meetings follow a prescribed format: Dialogue with university administrators, officers and committee reports, and the conduct of business.
This is a summary of the April 22-23, 2017 meeting, the first one for the 2016-2020 Board.
President Roberta J. "Bobbi" Cordano presented updates on new initiatives as well as the latest developments with the Sixth Street development project. Paul Julin, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, showed preliminary designs for the renovation of the Edward Miner Gallaudet Memorial Building, which will include a new welcome and reception area to be known as the Maguire Welcome Center. Planning and expectations for future Conversations Across Nation (CAN) programs were discussed, and the Board was asked for ideas for future event. We expressed a preference for multiple dates rather than a single date, and noted the importance of budgeting interpreting costs for DeafBlind participants.
Treasurer Scott A. Recht, ’79 & G-’81, gave an extensive report on GUAA finances, with specifics about the association’s general, Edward Miner Gallaudet, Percival Hall, and Ely-Padden funds.
The board voted to:
-- authorize the use of Fiscal Year 2017 fund payouts from the Alumni House Maintenance Fund for a new lighting system for Peikoff Alumni House;
-- co-donate $1,500, along with Gallaudet University, to become Gold Sponsors of the 200th anniversary celebration of the American School for the Deaf; and
-- appoint Marcia A. Zisman, ’80, as GUAA representative to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consumer Advocacy Network (DHH-CAN).
The Board donated $1,000 to the Dr. Isaac O. Agboola Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Isaac O. Agboola, ’81 & G-’83, who served as GUAA Treasurer of GUAA for 10 years, and $1,000 to the Gallaudet University General Fund in memory of Donald O. Peterson, G-'53, who served on the GUAA Board of Directors as Secretary and Treasurer for 18 years. Both of these donations are in accordance with GUAA guidelines on recognition of GUAA board members’ meritorious service.
The Board also voted to support the recommendation of its Recognition Committee to honor an alumnus by naming a facility.
In other actions, the Board:
-- asked its Finance Committee to review the current valuation trends of the GUAA investment portfolio, and report back to the October meeting;
-- investigate online payment systems such as Paypal and Square Cash;
-- charge the Recognition Committee with the responsibility of creating a new GUAA logo;
-- approve an updated GUAA Board committee list, and document for historical purposes which committees have been dissolved as of April 2017;
-- send congratulatory citations to the American School for the Deaf and the New York School for the Deaf on the occasion of their 200-year anniversaries; and
-- purchase an advertisement in the 2017 Tower Clock yearbook.
The next board meeting will be held on Thursday, October 19 and Friday, October 20, 2017, in conjunction with Homecoming.
