Gallaudet University will sponsor high school academic bowl competitions in February and March 2003. The top two teams from each regional competition will compete in the Seventh National Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students May 3-6 on the Gallaudet University campus. The National Academic Bowl for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students began in 1997 as an annual competition sponsored by Gallaudet University and the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation. The purpose is to foster the pursuit of academic excellence; promote a spirit of academic competition and good sportsmanship; and to encourage social opportunities for collegiality among students. The five Academic Bowl regions are: Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Midwest, West, and Southeast. Last year, a total of 62 high schools with programs for deaf students and residential schools for the deaf, participated in the regional competitions. This year, 80 schools are expected to compete.
